Potholes

Department of Public Works employees working on potholeEver wonder how a pothole is formed and why it seems they reappear from one year to the next?

The combination of snow, ice and rain provide ample moisture and severe cold causes pavement cracking that allows water to seep in, expand and displace paving material. Sunlight then creates varying temperatures that keep the damaging freeze/thaw cycle in motion. And finally, warmer spring weather accelerates the freeze/thaw cycle, causing pavement to deteriorate even more quickly.

City of Novi Department of Public Works staff are working diligently to patch these nuisances on Novi roadways.  Crews are constantly patrolling for – and repairing – potholes.  Community members and law enforcement personnel additionally share information regarding trouble spots.   It is the goal of the Public Works Department to have reported potholes on major roadways patched within 24 hours.  Community members should note that the City of Novi Public Works staff works in partnership with the Road Commission for Oakland County, who is ultimately responsible for Grand River Avenue, Novi Road, Ten Mile Road and Twelve Mile Road.  Neighborhood roadways pothole repairs are handled quite similarly to major roadway concern, with Public Works staff committed to patching these holes within a couple days.

To report a roadway in need of pothole repair, contact the Department of Public Works at 248-735-5640 or click here to send an email.
